CD: Summoning

Every once in a while it is nice to be wrong, and boy was I wrong as fuck.
My first 3 minute listen through on the Twelfth Gate "Summoning" was not neccesarily a bad experience, just considered "one of those bands" cds. Being the lover of music i am, i had to give it the full testing experience. I dropped the disc back in the cd player and picked out a few bands i thought may have influenced this bands sound. Nevermore, Maiden, and a few other power metal acts came to mind. But there is this odd mental taste to Twelfth Gate. I continuely roll it over in my pallete and still cannot figure it out. Mind you this is not a bad taste, just odd, especially from what i know about power metal. I really like their sound its like power metal with.......POWER and METAL. Its got the heavenly high vocals and well articulated guitar sounds. I pause the disk and get ready for the second test. I have a smoke and a smoke and start it over again. Twelfth Gate "Summoning" take 3. I realize that i am able to pick out that the music has gained more momentum. I hear guitar crunches that remind me of early Metallica, drums getting the fuck pounded out of them, and the demanding high vocals rise and fall with feeling. There is a lot to Twelfth Gate and for which i cannot give an honest review. Every note, every lead guitar squeal, masterfully pounded drums, and double bassed moment, swim in my head. These guys are tight. Twelfth Gate will not be classified by me no more. This band is top notch and should not be overlooked. They are METAL... period. I challenge you to classify them. Thrash, death, gloom, power, stoner or whatever. Good luck. I can promise you that Twelfth Gate's "Summoning" will not leave my cd holder for a while. I feel i should start doing MidWestMetal.Info 's top ten cds for the month and make this album my starting point as number one. Enjoy!!
