Hailing from the world's sludge metal capital, New Orleans La., Soilent Green's brainchild Ben Falgoust and ex-Acid Bath slayist Sammy Duet team up with Pat Bruders and Zak Nolan to form the mighty Goatwhore. What's Goatwhore's have to offer that has never been done before, you ask? Well where the fuck do I start? Is Goatwhore black metal? Maybe to some. Death metal? Mmmm...Nope. Sludge metal? Almost, Goatwhore play Goatwhore metal. It's has that New Orleans metal sound in the mix, but Ben has a unique vocal delivery that's backed up by the appropriate guitar riffage and drum poundage needed to give your collection of Goatwhore cd's a spin for when your typical tunes just won't cut it. If for some reason I had to label it, I'd probably just call it blackened sludge metal. Now I understand why some people hate labels so much. With that said, Funeral Dirge for the Rotting Sun takes Goatwhore where their previous album Eclipse Of Ages Into Black couldn't. The first two noticeable differences are the more mid-paced melodies and better production. Don't misunderstand that for being a step down in the Whore's aggressive nature because it's all there, and then some. Funeral Dirge (excuse me if I shorthand) does have maybe a couple fillers, but even their fillers are fucking good. Eclipse had no fillers, but then again, even the best songs on Eclipse would probably have been considered as fillers if they were put on Funeral Dirge. Don't get me wrong though, some of Goatwhore best tunes are on Eclipse, but the strong points on Funeral Dirge are just stronger, and sound even more amazing at their live performances. Funeral Dirge has a heavier fist than Eclipse did. Not to mention that Funeral Dirge is an easier album to digest and one that should, and will take Goatwhore to the next level. What really makes the band a freight train at full speed is their live shows. Tell your family members now that they better not meet their death near any dates that Goatwhore comes to your town because if they do, their funeral attendance will be one family member short. My favorite Funeral Dirge tracks are Blood Guilt Eucharist, Sky Inferno and Fires of the Judas Blood. Get this album or choke on a crawfish!
