Review:
Success is defined by many in the music industry, regardless of style in egocentric terms. Common prerequisite conditions that commonly encompass most performers ideal of the definition boils down to nothing more than fleets of expensive cars and wads of disposable income. Devin Townsend is a transcendent artist unencumbered by such selfish ideals. A man in self-possession of a magnanimous personality and a forthright wit that offers a no pretensions view upon the world about him and the music it inspires him to create.
Strapping Young Lad is the current vehicle Devin is using to express his vision. Combining crunching metal-guitar riffs, testicular rattling bass, cardiac paced drum lines and sonic intertwining keyboard runs that whip band and audiences alike into a fury of madness. His version on the “Death-Metal” motif offers a familiarity of sound without the generic insipid vocalizations that have become all too much the mainstay. With a range capable of a high C note or the lowest octave E, the voice of Hevy Devy bounces in a dizzying array that is complimentary to that of its crucible driven arrangements.
As Strapping Young Lad tours and prepares for the February 2003 release of the third album (S.Y.L), Devin generously gave of his time to be interviewed by MidwestMetal.Info.
