The Man, "The Contradictory Bastard", The STRAPPING YOUNG LAD

"Devy got a taste of the corporate community and never went back again!" (From the self titled song S.Y.L) Devin was a disgruntled opening supervisor at A&W and found himself thrown into a world where you "need to bring uour own lube." Devin Townsend is a troubled and paranoid musical genius! We are so greatful for that, even though Devin Townsend seems to write more for his own pleasure than anything. Devin is a contradiction to his own self, infact considers himself to be a "contradictory bastard." One week he will be a vegetarian and the next he will return to his carnivorous urges, such is seen in his span of music and band genres. Coarsing through the veins of music, Devin has taken us through his beautifully articulated multi-faceted career. Devin has crafted his own self titled solo projects, worked work with Steve Vai, Front Line Assembley, IR8 with Jason Newstead, the punk rock stylings of Punky Bruster, and into all powerful metal giants Zimmers Hole and Strapping Young Lad, whom we seen hours after this interview. Devin has recently found himself working on both his solo project and Strapping Young Lad. Up until recently S.Y.L seemed alomst another one of Devin's solo projects with in it's own genre's rights. Now with a full band, Strapping Young Lad have made it seem that they will be around for a while. We asked what Devin had thought about the change of having more people in Strapping Young Lad instead of mainly himself, and with a smile on his face replied "It's very different and i prefer working with other people and it doesn't stiffel creativity." S.Y.L songs are based on Devin's life, paranoia, and sense of humor, which is seemingly very off the wall. Now with that all said, Strapping Young Lad are on tour and are putting out their new cd "S.Y.L" this month, which is February. As far as Strapping Young Lad in concert, if you love metal and all forms of it, it is a must, to see these guys. Strapping in concert to me seems to be like a journey through my past with metal. They have this very undeniable stage presence and want you to have as much fun as they are!! They swing you through the high pitched "cheesy 80's hair metal", to the current death metal growls and goth-like keyboard filler. "Raise your horns in the air" and "bang you friggin head!!!" Strapping Young Lad seems to offer something to any metal lover.
