DARKTHRONE has always been about basic simple, grim, black metal, though at times in their career they have ventured into melody and have written some of the coldest riffs imaginable (Hans Siste Vinter, Earth’s Last Picture). But they always remain true to their roots, claiming the basics is where they will remain.

This for me is somewhat of a disappointment, not being a CELTIC FROST fan and loving the melody they have used at times. The opening riff to “Transylvanian Hunger” makes me quake with evil. I personally think that once your girlfriend shows you that trick she can do, she can’t just stop doing it after showing it to you, and, unfortunately, for the past three albums, excluding the song “WREAK” from “Plaguewielder,” they have refused to show us their majestic tricks with melody and it has been CELTIC FROST worship ever since.

“Hate Them” is no exception--straight ahead black metal with zero frills and even less melody, just slamming out harshness much in the vein of “Panzerfaust.” It’s a good record for any DARKTHRONE fan, and is for sure tr00 black metal, but it’s short on anything original and is at points entirely boring.

C’mon baby! Show me, show me, show me…………..
