Interview:

Hails and many thanks for taking the time to talk to me. This new CD seems about the most violent Aborym offering to date. What inspired you guys to such brutal heights?

Faust: For me, the music was already written for Generator when I entered the band, but I consciously used a lot of death metal, especially typical Cannibal Corpse, blasts to increase the heaviness during the blast beats and fast parts. The music is considerably slower now as well, but all the more heavy and twisted in my opinion.

I noticed that you seem to have put aside the black metal look. Was there a particular reason for this change?

Faust: Maybe I contributed to that, possibly. For me, the thing with corpse paint etc, belongs to the early 90ties, I think it is possible to look more dark and mysterious when you appear without make-up but with a good hand on the visual side of the layout. The band photos on Generator suits so well with the whole package and the layout.

How would you compare and contrast "Generator" to other releases like "Fire Walk With Me"?
Faust: As said, Generator is slower, but more varied and with better structured songs. There is also more melody to the songs but still, the music holds the characteristic Aborym trademark.
M:F: I think “Generator” is the most brutal and “dark” Aborym album. Personally I think this is our best release ever. No doubts.

The production on "Generator" is very polished, yet it retains a very brutal edge. Was this something you set out to do intentionally?
Faust: I think so. I talked with the producer a lot concerning the drums and they turned out the way I wanted to, although I wasn't present at the mixing. When the music is so complex and holding so many layers, I think it is important that the listener can hear what is going on, anything else would be insulting.

In most bands of your genre, the keyboard work can be very gratuitous. However, you guys seem to integrate it more into the music, rather than just using it for embellishment. Do you have any comments on the use of keyboards and choral vocals in metal?
Faust: In fact, Ihsahn of Emperor and Ivar of Enslaved where the first ones in black metal to actually use the keyboard or synth as an instrument in its own right, merely than just using it for adding a cosy layer of keyboard sound. I think this signifies the way many black metal bands use the synth; without further knowledge of the instrument they just use it in a very simple way to add “cool effects and atmosphere” to the music. Fabban and Nysrok use it as a instrument equally to guitars and drums, which is essential for me.

It seems that most of your lyrics follow an apocalyptic and dark esoteric vein. Who writes the lyrics and where do they draw inspiration from?
M:F: On Generator me and Faust wrote the lyrics and they all are based on the “Omnia Est Malis Est concept”: negativity, no hope of salvation, the evil rising, the age of the generator. No light and no happiness. Chaos, confusion, blood and death exclusively. This is what man created. This is what we’re living into.

What can the fans expect from upcoming Aborym releases?
Faust: We didn`t really think about that yet, but I reckon we will have to further improve the sound and music we have started on Generator, taking it to the next level.
M.F: The only thing I can assure is Aborym will perform extreme negative music. The best one. We’re gonna start write new stuff for a new album after summer, around September-october.

Again, thanks for taking the time to talk to me. Is there anything further you'd like to tell the fans. Any tour plans, or anything else you'd like metalheads to know?
Faust: No tours or gigs are planned at the moment although it would be cool to one day realize the possibility of doing gigs. Thanks for your interest. Support your local scene.
